Abstract: Cosemi recently announced the industry's first USB 3.1 second-generation hybrid active optical cable (hAOC), which extends the connection distance to 50 meters. These cables can be used with a variety of connectors, thus meeting a variety of applications. The fiber is used for data transmission, and the copper wire is further controlled and powered. The data portion of the cable fully supports USB SuperSpeed +, which means it can transmit 10Gbps in each direction.

According to ANANDTECH, Cosemi recently announced the industry's first USB 3.1 second-generation hybrid active optical cable (hAOC), which extends the connection distance to 50 meters. These cables can be used with a variety of connectors, thus meeting a variety of applications.

As you can see from the name, the second generation of Cosemi USB 3.1 hybrid active optical cable uses optical fiber for data transmission, and further cooperates with copper wire for control and power supply. The data portion of the cable fully supports USB SuperSpeed+, which means it can transmit 10 Gbps in each direction. More significantly, because hAOCs can be powered by themselves, unlike other solutions, they do not require any expansion boxes or repeaters, making them simpler and more reliable. Using fiber for data channels also means that the cable is better protected against EM and RF interference, which is especially important for medical applications.

The manufacturer plans to offer hAOCs using different types of connectors at both ends, including USB Type-A and Type-A, USB Type-A and Type-C, and USB Type-C and Type-C, among which USB Type-A and Type -C hAOC will be introduced to the market as the first product. While these cables are best suited for high bandwidth applications such as copper USB 3.1 Gen 2 cables, hybrid active cables are backward compatible with the USB 2.0 standard.

Interestingly, the Cosemi hAOCs do not use PVC materials because of the specification of in-wall cables in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and Asia, because PVC produces toxic fumes when burned.

Cosemi USB 3.1 second-generation hybrid active fiber optic cable is sampling now, and mass production will begin in March. These devices will be available from Cosemi's partners later this year, such as Amazon, Liberty AV Solutions, and others. Manufacturers have not set up MSRP, but expressed their desire to compete with USB expansion box solutions.
